Students from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, Hyde Park Academy, John F. Kennedy High School, Roberto Clemente Community Academy, South Shore School of Technology, and Thomas Kelly High School are enrolled. Pearson VUE, an electronic testing company, is coordinating the exams.

The students have prepared for certifications in computer support and networking. Those in the networking program learned to install, configure, and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols, and services, CompTIA said. “On behalf of the leadership and members of CompTIA, I commend all of these students and their instructors for their strong commitment to preparing for careers in the IT industry,” John Venator, president and CEO of CompTIA, said in a news announcement. “The skills these students are learning today establish the foundation for personal growth and career advancement in the future.”

CompTIA’s Education to Careers (E2C) program provides teachers and trainers with information, tools, and resources to prepare students for work in the IT industry. Membership in E2C is available to all publicly funded high schools and colleges, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies that provide IT training.

CompTIA also offers IT training for veterans, at-risk youth, dislocated workers, and people with disabilities through its Creating Futures program, which was recognized last when CompTIA’s Educational Foundation received the 2008 Award of Excellence. The American Society of Association Executive sand the center for Association Leadership in Washington, D.C., presented the award for Creating Futures, which offers training to people who are normally under-represented in the IT industry.

A survey of employees at businesses with 10 to 200 computer users found that more than one in four computer users reported having their productivity impacted by a spyware infection during the past six months. Of these, more than one-third reported multiple spyware inflections.

Even more alarming, users of spyware-infected computers reported “living with” the problem for 18 work hours more than two full workdays before getting it repaired. They did so even though they realized that their work productivity was reduced due to the problems associated with spyware. Users estimated their productivity was reduced by 21 percent when the spyware problem was first noticed; and was reduced by 32 percent when the problem was at its peak.

On top of the delay in reporting a spyware infection is the time it takes to fix the problem. A survey of PC-support professionals servicing small businesses and who had fixed at least one spyware incident during the past year reported spending an average of 2.8 labor hours per infected PC. Thats more than 20 hours of reduced worker productivity for each spyware incident at a small business.

CompTIA commissioned Kotler Marketing Group of Washington, D.C. (http://www.kotlermarketing.com/), a consulting firm specializing in value-based selling, to conduct the survey to better understand the frequency and cost of problems such as spyware, viruses and network and server downtime among small businesses.

Two separate online surveys were conducted in late 2007. One questioned 537 end users who work in non-IT roles at small and mid-sized businesses in the financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and professional services industries. The other survey queried 200 IT professionals who support small and mid-sized businesses. Respondents were based in North America, with approximately 80 percent in the United States and 20 percent in Canada. The ITCC will be the “go-to” resource for employers, government officials, academia, workforce development, and individuals seeking information about the many advantages and benefits of IT certification.

Founding members of the ITCC include leading IT corporations HP, IBM, Microsoft, Novell, and Sun; the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) and the Linux Professional Institute (LPI); test development and delivery providers Pearson VUE and Prometric; and education provider Kaplan.

“The industry has come together to drive the value of certification,” said Bill Horzempa, ITCC chair and director of the Worldwide HP Certified Professional Program at HP. “We want our customers and partners to know that we, as industry leaders, are providing them with well-equipped people to do the job.”

MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional)
Like I even had to list this one. This will probably always be number 1 for the next 1,000 years. There are over 2 million people with this certification.

CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
This one comes in 2nd as most network administrator jobs right now are IP related and they are in more demand at higher professional level as compared to Microsoft Certifications.

MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer)
This has been a rocket since last year. Demand for these developers are up over 80% compared to last year, and does not seem to be slowing down any time soon. There are only a little over 3000 currently with the certification. If you are looking for a certification track, I would give this one a lot of consideration.

SCJP (SUN Certified Java Programmer)
Today, a Java credential is one of the most valuable credentials that a programmer or developer can have. About 70% of business entities’ development projects are done through J2EE.

CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)
One of the elite certifications. With CISSP’s earning $94,070 a year on average, it is easy to see why this one is on the list. The exam lasts up to six hours and includes 250 multiple choice questions. It is also $500, so you might want to study for this one.

Comptia A+
I figured everyone had this already, but I guess not. This is the first certification almost everyone gets when first starting in the IT field. It is by far the most popular entry level certification.

Comptia Network +
Coming in right behind A+. This is usually the 2nd certification that most IT. Professionals acquire. Which is great because Network systems and data communications analysts is ranked Number 2 on the ‘Most in Demand Jobs’ list.

MCTS SQL Server 2005 (The Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist)
SQL Server 2005 is going to be hot next year. A lot of companies are switching to SQL Server 2005 and these guys are going to be in big demand. Companies of all sizes need these professionals to manage everything from planning a new database to managing and supporting existing databases.

RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer)
About 25% of enterprises will be running mission-critical business applications on the Linux open source operating system by 2009, according to a survey by Saugatuck Technology and Business Week Research Services. By the end of 2007 the figure will be 18%. RHCE is called the ‘crown jewel of Linux certifications’.

Comptia Security+
Growth in Security+, which covers topics like communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, access control and authentication, shows no signs of slowing down. Comptia’s Security+ Credential is a must have in today’s world.
